Coordinating residence, succession and ownership across jurisdictions

We developed a single planning framework for an internationally mobile family whose residence, operating business, investment assets and future beneficiaries were spread across several jurisdictions.

The family had accumulated its affairs over many years: an operating company, personal investment vehicles, real estate and succession arrangements had each been established at a different moment and for a different purpose.

A planned move to Spain created the right moment to examine how those pieces interacted. This anonymised case study illustrates how we turn a collection of local arrangements into one coherent private wealth strategy.

The challenge

  • Reconciling different concepts of ownership and succession.
  • Understanding the Spanish treatment of established overseas structures.
  • Preserving commercial control while preparing for generational change.
  • Creating a plan the family and its advisers could administer in practice.

Our approach

Technical precision, focused on the client.

01

One factual map

We began with the family rather than the entities, mapping residence, decision-making, cash flows, legal ownership and intended beneficiaries across every relevant jurisdiction.

02

Coordinated advice

We worked with existing overseas counsel to compare the tax and succession consequences of keeping, adapting or replacing each arrangement.

03

Sequenced implementation

The agreed changes were ordered around the move to Spain, avoiding steps that would have created avoidable tax, reporting or governance friction.

The outcome

The family received a documented, jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction plan that aligned residence, ownership and succession without adding unnecessary structures.

The framework also established annual review points so that later changes in residence, family circumstances or investment strategy could be addressed before they created inconsistencies.

The strongest international wealth plans are not collections of local answers. They are one plan, understood by the family and capable of working across borders.
